Join the Skaneateles Volunteer Fire Department

When the siren sounds across the village and around the lake, it isn’t a distant crew answering the call—it’s your friends, neighbors, local business owners, teachers, and co-workers.

The Skaneateles Volunteer Fire Department has protected our community for generations, responding to structure fires, motor vehicle accidents, water rescues, and mutual aid calls throughout Central New York. But our strength relies entirely on people willing to step up.

You don’t need prior experience—just the drive to serve. We provide all the professional gear, comprehensive state-certified training, and a dedicated team that has your back from day one. Whether your interest lies in interior firefighting, exterior support, apparatus operation, marine rescue, or behind-the-scenes administrative roles, there is a vital place for you at the station.

10 Reasons to Join a Volunteer Fire Department

  1. Protect Your Own Community
You aren’t just responding to an address; you’re showing up for your neighbors, friends, and the places you live or work every day.
  2. Unmatched Brotherhood and Camaraderie
Few bonds match the trust built between firefighters. Joining gives you a second family that trains, works, and supports each other through every challenge.
  3. Free, Professional-Grade Training
From basic exterior firefighting and vehicle extrication to pump operations and water rescue, all certifications and gear are provided at zero cost to you.
  4. Diverse Roles Beyond the Fireground
Not every role involves running into burning buildings. Departments need apparatus drivers, scene support, marine crew, logistics coordinators, and administrative support.
  5. Build Mental Toughness and Problem-Solving Skills
Emergencies demand quick thinking, adaptability, and calm communication under pressure—skills that directly carry over into your professional and personal life.
  6. Tangible Financial and State Benefits
In New York State, volunteer firefighters are eligible for meaningful local property tax exemptions, state income tax credits, and Length of Service Award Programs (LOSAP) service pensions.
  7. Stay Fit and Physically Active
Firefighting is functional tactical fitness. Training drills, hose deployment, and ladder work provide an active, purpose-driven workout you won’t get on a treadmill.
  8. Stand Out Professionally
Employers value volunteers who demonstrate reliability, crisis management, leadership, and community dedication. Active service strengthens any resume.
  9. Make a Direct, Immediate Impact
On someone’s absolute worst day, your response directly changes the outcome. There is no guesswork about whether your time mattered.
  10. Carry on a Proud Local Tradition
Volunteer fire departments are the bedrock of towns like Skaneateles. By joining, you ensure that vital, neighbor-helping-neighbor tradition continues for the next generation.
