Introducing the SKANEATELES FIRE FITNESS program at the Skaneateles Community Center. Another great and unique reason to join the Skaneateles Fire department is our partnership with the Skaneateles Community Center. Members of the department enjoy a paid membership and can use the community center in multiple ways. Health and Safety are essential in the volunteer fire service. In the fire service, your body is the most important piece of equipment you own.
Unlike a chainsaw or a thermal imager, you can’t simply replace it if it fails in the middle of a structure fire. Staying healthy and fit helps prevent Injury Prevention and creates longevity in the fire service. The gear alone adds roughly 50–75 lbs of weight, putting immense strain on the back, knees, and shoulders.
A dedicated fitness routine—focused on core stability and mobility—protects your joints from the repetitive stress of the job and helps ensure you enjoy a healthy life long after retirement. We don’t train because we love the gym; we train because the citizens we serve—and the crew members to our left and right—deserve our very best on their worst day.
